 Listening is the most basic element to have effective communication. Whatever messages can be easily misinterpreted with the absence of listening. While active listening is the process to fully focus on the speaker, understanding and comprehending the messages while responding with complete thoughts.

Here are some tips for active listening:

Think about learning new things

Every time you are talking with someone, always put in mind that you will learn something from him or her. This way, you can keep yourself focused, and your mind eager to learn.

Avoid talking and pay attention to the speaker

As long as the speaker is not yet done with what he or she is saying, do your best not to talk or do something that will interrupt the person talking.

Formulate open-ended questions

Our goal is to gain something from the speaker. When the speaker is done talking, ask some open-ended questions. Always do your best to keep the conversation going.

Check your understanding

If there are details that you need to clarify, do not hesitate to ask direct questions. This is to avoid misunderstanding any information.

Show your interest to the speaker

Not all have the courage and confidence to speak. We must be aware that some are scared or hesitant to speak, especially in front of many people. Even with your little actions, you can give the speaker negative feedback. If you think that the speaker is having a hard time expressing what is on his or her mind, encourage him or her by simply giving him or her a smile.

Not only that gaining ideas and information are the benefits of active listening but it can give the other person a chance to earn encouragement and confidence to speak as well.
